Wycombe don’t have an academy, so it’s vital that Ainsworth is comfortable managing players who are coming towards the end of their careers. Jacobson, Matt Bloomfield and Darius Charles are all well into their 30s and were regulars throughout the campaign. Adebayo Akinfenwa is 38 but has played 39 times this season. You would be hard-pushed to find a better team spirit than Wycombe’s anywhere in the country. They comfortably avoided an immediate return to the fourth tier last season, before winning promotion to the Championship this. There were a few murmurings of discontent among a minority of fans at that point, but Ainsworth continued to evolve and Wycombe won promotion to League One in 2018. Wycombe only avoided relegation to the Conference on goal difference in 2013/14, but the board stuck with Ainsworth after that season of struggle and their patience has subsequently been rewarded.
